Sustainable Tourism and Ecological Management (STEM): an initiative by JKPI
Kashmir like other Himalayan regions faces a pressing need to balance tourism activities with environmental conservation and sustainable growth. The STEM initiative of JKPI aims to have collaborative efforts to preserve the natural beauty of rural Kashmir while promoting sustainable tourism practices. With the involvement of local communities, JKPI helps enhance green spaces, ensure cleanliness, and protect Kashmir’s rich natural and cultural assets.
JKPI recognises that for sustainable tourism to flourish in Kashmir, it is important to involve and empower local communities. By engaging residents in conservation efforts, the project fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility and ensures the preservation of the region’s ecological diversity. Through awareness campaigns, training programs, and capacity-building initiatives, JKPI trains community members with the knowledge and skills needed to protect their environment and promote sustainable practices. This grassroots approach not only enhances the impact of conservation efforts but also nurtures a culture of environmental consciousness among the locals.
STEM strongly emphasises cleanliness and waste management, working closely with local authorities and volunteers to implement sustainable waste disposal practices and maintain hygiene standards in tourist spots— and contributes to the overall well-being of residents and visitors.
