Human Rights In Jammu and Kashmir: A Study Of Socio-Economic Situation

Abstract

This study provides an evaluation of human rights concerning the socio-economic situation in Jammu and Kashmir. It highlights the narrative of peacebuilding that can be created in the region through the actualization of human rights. However, the study reveals that the wide-ranging ways of implementation of human rights by the Government may not have been successful in preserving socio-economic rights, free speech, and privacy in Jammu and Kashmir. Over-securitization of the state apparatus in the development of policies, the presence of insurgency elements and conflict within the indigenous groups creates a negative impact on the sustainability of human rights in the region. The prolonged militancy and conflicts between different groups in Kashmir have created conditions of inequality. These include inequalities and discrimination in the realms of literacy and gender for the people in Kashmir. Furthermore, the study also analyzes the overall impact of human rights curtailment on poverty indicators such as food, education, housing and employment.
